About ISO

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world’s largest developer and publisher of International Standards.

ISO was founded in 1974; it is a network of the national standards institutes of 162 countries, one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system.

ISO is a non-governmental organization that forms a bridge between the public and private sectors. Many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government. On the other hand, other members have their roots uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations.

ISO is the world largest standards developing organization. Between 1947 and the present day, ISO has published more than 17500 International Standards, ranging from standards for activities such as agriculture and construction, through mechanical engineering, to medical devices, to the newest information technology developments.

ISO’s name

Because “International Organization for Standardization” would have different acronyms in different languages (“IOS” in English, “OIN” in French for Organisation international de normalization), its founders decided to give it also a short, all-purpose name. They chose “ISO”, derived from the Greek isos, meaning “equal”. Whatever the country, whatever the language, the short form of the organization’s name is always ISO.

Food Safety concept-ISO22000

HACCP was first developed as a means of assuring the safety of food produced for the U.S. space program. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) wanted a “zero defects” program to guarantee safety in the foods astronauts would consume in space.

ISO22000:2005 is an international Standard that specifies requirements for a food safety management system where an organization in the food chain needs to ensure that food is safe at the time of human consumption by demonstrating its ability to control food safety hazards (biological, physical and chemical).

A major resulting benefit is that ISO22000 makes it easier for organizations to implement the Codex HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) system for food hygiene in a harmonized way, which does not vary with the country or food product concerned.
